Packing, wooden crating and machinery packing for export

Export and shipping packing means preparing packaging that suits the goods, their weight, size, lifting method and mode of transport, to reduce the risk of impact, crushing, moisture and movement during transit.

KTC Global Logistics coordinates cargo packing, wooden crating, machinery packing, wooden skids and pallets for road, sea and air freight, and checks the goods and site details before quoting.

If you are not sure whether to use cartons, open crates, closed crates, wooden skids or pallets, send photos of the goods with their size, weight and pickup location for an initial check.

What does KTC’s packing service cover?

The packing method is chosen according to the goods, the mode of transport and the risks of each shipment, and we can coordinate several types of packaging work.

Wooden crating

We make wooden crates for goods that need extra protection, choosing the design by size, weight, lifting method and the nature of the goods.

Options include:

  • Closed wooden crates
  • Open (slatted) wooden crates
  • Wooden skids to support the goods
  • Wooden frames to brace and secure the goods

Machinery and spare parts packing

Machinery and spare parts are often heavy, irregular in shape or sensitive to impact, so the base, lifting points, bracing and protective materials should be planned together.

Materials used as needed include foam, cushioning, film, plastic covers, and moisture and abrasion protection.

Pallets and wooden skids

Suitable for goods moved by forklift or other lifting equipment, and for goods stacked on pallets for easier transport and storage.

Packing fragile or high-value goods

Some goods, such as specialised equipment, furniture, artwork or fragile parts, may need packing designed piece by piece, taking into account load points, void space and movement inside the package.

Why does choosing the right packaging matter?

The right packing reduces risk during lifting, handling, stacking and transport, but no single type of packaging suits every product.

Factors to consider include:

  • Weight of the goods
  • Centre of gravity
  • Fragility
  • Sensitivity to moisture
  • Lifting by forklift or crane
  • Stacking
  • Transport by road, sea or air
  • Time in transit
  • Destination country requirements

Do export wooden crates need ISPM 15?

ISPM 15 is the international standard for managing pest risks from wood packaging made of raw wood used in international trade, such as wooden crates, pallets and dunnage.

Wood covered by ISPM 15 must be treated using an approved method and can carry the ISPM 15 mark once it meets the requirements.

However, not every wood material falls under the same rules. For example, processed materials such as plywood, where manufacturing has reduced the pest risk, may be outside the scope of ISPM 15.

Before making wooden crates for an export shipment, check the material type, packing method and destination country requirements.

More information is available from the International Plant Protection Convention – ISPM 15

Which goods is the packing service suitable for?

The service suits goods that need extra protection or packaging before shipping, such as:

  • Machinery and factory equipment
  • Spare parts and industrial components
  • Heavy cargo
  • Furniture
  • Artwork or fragile goods
  • Electrical and electronic equipment
  • Goods that need to be palletised
  • Goods that need a wooden base or frame to secure them

Each case must be checked, because some goods have extra requirements, such as dangerous goods, batteries, chemicals or temperature-controlled cargo.

What information do you need before asking for a packing quote?

To assess the packing method, materials, equipment and cost as accurately as possible, send the following:

  • Product name and type
  • Quantity and number of packages
  • Dimensions (width × length × height) of each piece
  • Weight of each piece and total weight
  • Photos of the goods
  • Photos of the work area, if available
  • Lifting points or lifting method
  • Work or pickup location
  • Destination country of the shipment
  • Mode of transport, such as road, sea or air
  • Preferred work date
  • Special requirements, such as moisture, shock or rust protection

For machinery or heavy cargo, give accurate lifting points, machine base details and weights so the right equipment and working method can be planned.

How does the packing service work?

1. Send details and photos

Send the product name, quantity, size, weight, photos and work location for an initial check.

2. Assess the packing method

We consider the packaging type, cushioning, base, bracing and the handling method that suits the goods.

3. Site survey, if needed

For machinery, large items or goods with special conditions, we may arrange a site visit to assess lifting, the work area and the equipment needed.

4. Quotation and scope

Once we have enough information, our team confirms the work method, materials, service scope and cost for your review.

5. Schedule the work

After you confirm, we arrange the date, time and location for packing or crating.

6. Prepare the goods for shipping

When the work is complete, the goods are ready to enter the planned transport process.

Can the site be surveyed before packing?

Yes, a site survey can be arranged where needed, especially for machinery, large or heavy items, or locations with handling restrictions.

A survey helps assess access, lifting points, forklift or crane use, entrance sizes and where the packing will be done.

Frequently asked questions about packing

Does KTC make wooden crates for export?

Yes, we can coordinate wooden crates, open and closed crates, wooden skids and pallets. The size, weight, type of goods and shipment requirements are checked before quoting.

Can I get a quote from photos alone?

Photos help with an initial assessment, but please also send the size, weight, quantity and work location so materials and cost can be estimated more accurately.

Does every export wooden crate need an ISPM 15 stamp?

Do not assume every wood material needs ISPM 15. The standard targets packaging made of raw wood in international trade, and some processed wood materials are outside its scope, so check the material type and destination country before use.

Do you pack large machinery?

Send the details for an initial check. Large or heavy machinery may need a site survey and planning for lifting or extra equipment before quoting.

Can you pack the goods and then ship them abroad?

KTC Global Logistics provides international transport, so we can check both the packing and the onward shipment by road, sea or air based on your shipment details.

How many days does crating or packing take?

It depends on the quantity, size, crate type, materials and site, so send the details for checking before setting a work date.

What do you need to send for a packing quote?

  1. Photos of the goods
  2. Product name and type
  3. Quantity
  4. Dimensions (width × length × height)
  5. Weight of each piece
  6. Work location
  7. Mode of transport
  8. Destination country
  9. Preferred work date
  10. Any special packing requirements
